So over the last couple days I have been planning a couple lumber runs.
Went out to a yard that had some QS Sycamore for my upcoming state fair project. I found a board that i think will do the trick, and had them cut it 1 inch to long at first... We have a VW rabbit... the Fiancee closed the hatch a little hard and the windshield didn't like that. thank the lord Florida requires windshield replacement for free. So, we are getting a new windshield tomorrow ... the old one is pitted up from gravel and always looks dirty anyway.

Along with the Sycamore I got a pack of Eucalyptus veneer for $7.50. total for the 2 were $40... That's not the gloat


I went over to another person that I found on CL a wile back and picked up some oak. I made a couple of jewelry boxes for him and his wife.



I traded the 2 jewelry boxes plus one more " whenever you get around to it" for 58 bf of 8/4 oak all 6+" wide. yes that is 58 board feet. The oak is for my soon to be bench. I am also picking up a piece or 2 of 8/4 cherry from him in the trade as well.

That would depend on how much you charge for your time. Where I live, 58 b.f. of 8/4 red oak is worth about $130 on CL, and a simple jewelry box with no internal trays or linings costs me about 12-15 hours to make by hand (including finishing with oil - french polish means about doubling the number of hours). So, 3 jewelry boxes = 36-45 hours, or about $2.88 - $3.60 per hour. Whether that's worth it to you or not depends on how much value you put on your leisure time.

I think it was worth my time. Down here in florida its just about impossible to find any lumber for less then $3-bf, and I think last I checked at my local hardwood supplier 8/4 oak was closer to $5-bf. that comes out to about $300.
In this market I would be lucky to get $75 for each box, So I figure I made a conple bucks in the trade. Also Time I have but money is tight.
I also got to try a few new things and use up some scraps on the boxes, the finish was bought for another project and using it is better then it sitting and going bad. I am also getting some 8/4 cherry in that trade and I know the comercial rate for that around here is easily $6-bf, and I will most likely end up with 10+bf of it.

All that being said for the going lumber rates around here and the fact that I would rather be building and refigning my skills, I think I came out on top.
