    HD Ready Sign

    Here is the last HD theater sign I made for my son. The material is 1/2" MDF, no roughing toolpath, finishing toolpath was done using 1/8" taper ball nose, 14,000 RPM and 400 in/min feed rate .... yes 400 in/min.

    Interesting, no roughing toolpath and it looks like you're rastering at 45 degrees?

    I'd be interested in the "why" of these two approaches. What are the advantages/disadvantages of not using a roughing pass for 3D and rastering at 45 degrees?

    Wow, just noticed the acceleration in the flat areas. My machine isn't configured to accellerate that fast, but it's because it simply isn't reliable configured that way because it loses steps.

    If you raster at 45 degrees then your first cut is very short, less pressure/strain on the bit, if you cut along the X or Y axis then it will be a long cut and there is a good chance you will break the router bit. Check out this on the Vectric website http://www.vectric.com/WebSite/Vectric/pvc/flash/Lithophane/Getting_started.htm

    I know the link is for Photo V Carve but the general idea is the same for 3D (which a lithophane is)

    The depth of cut was only .125 so I decided to use the finishing toolpath, if it was deeper then I would have used a roughing toolpath, same goes for the feed rate.
