    Mag switch sizing confusion

I need to replace a mag switch that is physically damaged from moving the machine. I notice that the switches are rated both for amps and horsepower. The machine in question has a fairly efficient motor and though it is well inside the 3hp rated switch in terms of amperage it is a 5hp motor. I am confused as to why I would need the 5hp rated switch if the amperage is within the 3hp rated switches capacity. My only guess is 5hp motors may require a bigger inrush current on start up than 3hp motors even if the maximum running current draw is the same or lower.

If a starter does not meet the the motor specs, you need increase the size of the starter.
