Shellac as sealer - exterior use

I have been constructing a lot of insulated bee hive bodies using luan underlayment as a skin over rigid insulation. Naturally this material must be well protected from the weather. I have been applying a shellac seal-coat (wax-free) prior to two coats of primer and finish house paint. Am I making a mistake here? Should I skip the seal-coat and just use two coats of primer? I know shellac is normally considered as appropriate only for interior applications. In other words, would the alkyd primer adhere better to the raw wood?

    Thanks

I don't see why the shellac would be necessary. As long as you use a good exterior primer and paint, you should have plenty of protection.

I too think the shellac is not needed.

Finishing is an 'Art & a Science'. Actually, it is a process. You must understand the properties and tendencies of the finish you are using. You must know the proper steps and techniques, then you must execute them properly.
