    Mike, have you considered forgetting the Zinsser stuff alltogether and just buying some shellac flakes? Then you can mix up your own, knowing exactly what the cut is, exactly how old it is, and exactly how pure the solvent (DNA) is. That would eliminate a lot of your potential sources of problem. Mixing your own is really, really easy (and probably much cheaper).

    Steve, I think Zinsser now has instructiosn not to thin on their Bulls Eye shellac ( I haven't bought any SealCoat recently). I don't think it's just products sold in California. Really sounds dumb as their SealCoat is a "thinned" formulation compared to the standard Bulls Eye.

    Yes, Zinsser has changed their date code. It was published on another forum but I don't recall how to interpret it.

    Thanks for all the tips.


    I scraped the Zinsser stuff off and used some shellac that I mixed myself. My homemade stuff worked out well.
