    small box

    i built this in a few hours for a local charity auction. it's quilted/curly maple whatever you want to call it, walnut and yellowheart. the yellow heart was free as a result of a ebay seller's shipping mistake (ordered a bunch of spanish cedar and he sent that along as well). just a little paste wax for finish.

    there are a few mistakes, but for how fast i made it, i am pleased overall.

    the miters on the walnut edge that moves with the lid don't close neatly due to some movement during gluing, but since it's meant to open i guess it's not too bad.

    Great looking box. I never thought of doing a lid that way but I think I might.

    yeah it was improvised but turned out okay. i planned to hinge the top, but went to my stash of hinges and came up empty. with the time constraints, i had to come up with a quick solution and i like how this worked out...

    how did you join the maple and walnut? Did you glue it ?

    well it's all just glued, but there's a band of yellow heart between the maple and walnut. I glued it up in a long enough piece to make four sides of the box, then cut the individual sides:
