    Wife's Request

My wife asked me to build a bench for our family room. While she was away on a trip last week I built this Nantucket bench. I found the plans for this bench in the March 2005 (vol. 26/No. 151) Woodsmith magazine. It is fairly simple to build and yet it makes a nice project that could easily fit in with many home decor's. I decided to paint the bottom black and so I built that part out of poplar. The seat is made out of hard maple and stained with a pecan stain that matches our cabinets.

That looks very nice Gordon. I like the functionality of the lower shelf. How long is it?

Looks great Gordon, and I too think it would go with most home decor's.

Did you paint the black or use a stain and/or ink?

Thanks James. I painted it with semi-gloss enamel after a light coat of shellac. The first coat I used a brush and then I lightly sanded it and then followed that up with two coats of spray.

I really like it. Especially the black base. Are the legs vertical or do they splay a little?
