Sizing Mobile base for Floor Drill Press

    Hello All,

I have ordered a floor model Drill press which should be here tomorrow afternoon. The manufactuer recommends a 24 x 24" mobile base which seems like overkill for a base that is 18 x 11". I do want to have a solid base as drill presses are so top heavy but not 24 x 24. What are the dimensions of your mobile base?

    Thanks, Bill

I'm actually thinking that sounds pretty reasonable. Seems like tipping would always be a worry for a DP and making the base even larger for a mobile DP sounds like a good idea.

Seems reasonable to me... sounds about what I did for my Delta 18-900L. The top piece is soooo heavy, the last thing you want is that thing tilting in any direction when you're trying to get something on the table, move it around the shop, etc.

Just finished making a mobile base and it was 24 x 24. It just seemed to be the right size to avoid a tipping problem.

Depends on the Drill Press. If it starts to tilt, is it light enough for you to stop it with one finger? No? Then 24" x 24" seems reasonable. Mine is slightly smaller but, it is a ballast box with 100# of dry cement inside.

That's pretty sweet, Glenn. I like the weighted idea.

    Very nice, Glenn.

Question: The bolts that hold the drill base to your base; do they go all the way through your box?
