Thread: Black Walnut Natural Edge

  1. Black Walnut Natural Edge

I typically get Walnut like this by the trailer load, and I can't resist turning natural edge bowls when the wood/bark is good. So here is yet another one of them (with a few more still to come at some point in the future). The bowl is 15-1/2" wide and 4-1/2" tall at the tips, so relatively shallow. The wood is as pretty as walnut gets around here. I have nothing to do with that, so I don't mind bragging on God's creation. C&C welcomed.

Great piece! Even with that natural edge, it has a certain smoothness to it. I think you matched the form perfectly with the grain. Very good job!

Mark, that is simply beautiful!! I love the flowing, slightly ogee, form, and the wall thickness is perfect!

    Mark,

This is great. Ive come into some walnut myself. Ive had fun turning it and am wondering how i should finish it. It doesnt apear that you oiled it. What did you use to keep the color so clear? Ive found that oil tends to darken everything more than i would like.

Jason - I typically use Antique Danish oil on these pieces, but the store that supplies me was out recently and I picked up a can of Watco Danish oil (natural) and used it on this piece. It works the same as the ADO but takes a bit longer to cure.

The form flow beautifully, and walnut is one of the best looking woods for NE's.
