Pair of Walnut Crotch Platters

This is a pair of platters, one of which will go to my friend who had a walnut tree taken down at his daughter's house. The tree was right by the driveway and made such a mess they felt they had to remove it. I had a previous post about deciding to make two platters as opposed to one bowl, and the time it took to part(saw) the blank by hand without the aid of a McNaughton tool or electric chain saw. All in all I am glad I took the effort to make the two platters and not leave a lot of crotch wood on the floor.

The first one is 14" in diameter and the second 14.5". Both finished with home brew oil and beall buffed. I did put a couple coats of WOP on the first one, but not the second. I also wanted to try out my Sorby mini spiraling tool, and it worked out pretty well on the rim of the second platter. Thanks for looking, critiques and comments alway given great consideration.

Steven those are just beautiful pieces. I really like what you did with the rim treatment with the texturing tool. Did the grain in the feathuring pattern lay down for you? I know I've had pieces where you just couldn't get that type of grain to stay flat.

Beautiful, just beautiful! You've done that piece of wood justice! I've got a couple of crotch pieces I don't want to waste on a bowl - will have to mount and part them similarly, thanks for the pics.

I know what you mean. Even thought is is not apparent to the eye, you can feel it slightly with your fingers. I think I could have sanded until I reached air and would have the same thing.

I actually like the finish on the platter without the WOP. It is not as shiny, but I the chatoyance is better, it is hard to describe, but the one without the WOP seems more natural to me. Probably just personal preference but the one with the WOP I can see the wood, but the one without the WOP other I can see into the wood, if that makes any sense.

Excellent work on both and the wood is great! My wife has a friend that talked a couple of months ago about wanting to get some walnut trees in her yard taken down. She is alergic to them and has three: one small, one medium and one big. Her husband hadn't wanted the big one cut. She stopped by yesterday and after my wife showed her some turnings, said they were getting tired of the broken branches from the big one landing in the driveway. If I didn't mind, perhaps next spring I could take it down. I mentioned that the winter months would be the best time! She said she would talk to her husband... Maybe I should send your pictures to assist in their decision!
