    Turned box of ?

This is a box turned from wood give to me by a turning friend shortly before his death two weeks ago. It is 4 1/2 x 2" approx. size. If anyone has an idea as to what kind of wood it is, let me know. Finished with oil and wax. Trying to correct white balance, choose the slighter warmer rendition.

    I'd guess Myrtle.

The wood is very hard and heavy with a tight grain. Allan

Cool..this piece reminds me of the northern lights...well done..sorry to hear about the friend...what a way to have him live on!

Myrtle would be a great guess...perhaps some bark or other identifiable traits can assist further.

Pretty box Allan. My thought was Myrtle as well though I have only turned a couple of pieces of it.

I am sure your friend would be pleased by your form. Nice box, I like the knob top. Looks a little warmer in color than the myrtle I have turned. Did it smell spicy when you turned it? Myrtle has a nice spicy scent when turned. Good work.

No odor noted, and it is I believe to heavy and hard for Myrtle. Before the finish under incandescent light color were yellow, brown to purple.

Looks like a fine sample of Mulberry to me.
