Thread: White Oak Burl NE

  1. White Oak Burl NE

I started out with a larger piece intending to do a taller NE form, but the wood had other ideas. It came apart into pieces and left me with a chunk that I salvaged into this small piece. It ended up 4-1/2" tall and 5-1/2" wide.

Mark, it may have been a fortuitous event!! Sure looks nice as is, but I am sure your original plan would have looked good, too. What little oak burl I have played with has been full of bark inclusions and hidden voids/crevices/weak areas.

The base is really making me look more! Glad you weren't smacked in the process of making something smaller! Sometimes smaller is good!

Nice work and a lot of character Mark. I have only turned a couple pieces of oak burl but one of them was only partly wood. Once I picked out the bark, there wasn't a lot left.
