    Bandsaw question

Hope someone can give me some advice. I have an old bandsaw that I picked up a fer years ago. The only labeling on it are
    SHOPMASTER
    MINNEAPOLIS MINN
It has a throat capacity of 12 1/2" and height of about 7". The guide blocks are 5/16" brass round stock. Can anyone recomend a better material to use rather than brass?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Those who sense the winds of change should build windmills, not windbreaks.

I think I would aleast change the brass to hardwood dowels. Even if you can't find 5/16, 3/8 and a big hammer would work.
