Red oak, white oak is too grey. You would get a "muddy" look
Hello, My name is John and I am a toolaholic
Honey oak is a really common stain on floors, so that's probably what's in her mind. And floors are generally red oak.
"Honey Oak" "Golden Oak" etc are nothing but names that the marketing guy dreamed up. Get a piece or red oak and provide a few choices to the customer; don't forget to top coat, grain fill etc. as you plan to do on the project.
Since it's a sewing cabinet I suspect you will need to fill the grain, at least on the top, to give her a smooth flat top.

Finishing is an 'Art & a Science'. Actually, it is a process. You must understand the properties and tendencies of the finish you are using. You must know the proper steps and techniques, then you must execute them properly.
thanks for the input guys. ed
