WOW! Was about all I could say as I opened the prize donated by Steve Knight of Knight Toolworks. Steve donated a beautiful purpleheart high angle coffin smoother. Having never seen a Knight plane in person I am very impressed. It’s big and heavy, the blade is massive, and the throat as small as any plane I’ve seen. The smooth body feels great in the hand and the shavings are whisper thin. Steve also encourages people to try his plane at the contest or even if you don’t have a plane it will available for use. I’m sure we will have some folks more experienced in tuning these fine planes then I, but it was good to go out of the box.

So don’t forget the IndyFest Hand Plane Competition April 30th. Other prizes include a beautiful large Veritas shoulder plane from Lee Valley, an iron low angle block plane with leather holster from Lie-Nielsen, and 15 subscriptions for Popular Woodworking Magazine.

It should be a great event.
