Thread: German bow saw?

    German bow saw?

I got this bow saw today and the story is an old German gentleman brought it over to USA on a ship when he immigrated. I see no manufacturer mark and the stretcher looks to be a replacement. Anyone have any ideas about who would have made it and when?

My guess would be the old German made it when he was a young German

I found what may be a logo on the blade after wiping the rust off. Any idea who made it?

Well, the blade may or may not be from the original manufacturer of the saw. The saw body looks amazingly like my Ulmia bow saw, before I replaced the wire and eye bolt tensioning mechanism with a Spanish windlass. How is the stretcher joined to the end pieces? On my Ulmia, both parts of the joint have a narrow slot machined into them, and a metal "biscuit" about the thickness of a washer fits into the slots.

This mark (a hat with a tuftofchamoishair) was registered in 1921 by Gebr. [Bros.] Tesche in Wuppertal-Cronenberg:

I don't know much about this firm, but they seem to be still in business.

My guess on the saw would also be Ulmia.
