Mystery Wood. Does anyone know what it is?

This is a burl that I either got from John Keeton when I visited him or from Mike Smith. I'm old and don't remember which. Anyway, I got it out today and started roughing it out. It had an almost vinegar smell, or tart or acidy. It's nothing I recognize but thought that some of you guys might.

+1 on myrtle, but the myrtle I have has a sweet smell to it. I just cut it into rounds from soaking wet and it smelled really nice...maybe curly cottonwood as an option.

Why don't you just ask John or Mike. I'll bet one of them remembers.

Ed, if it came from me, I am nearly certain it was a Big Leaf Maple piece. Cottonwood is out - I have some, but no burl. Only had one piece of myrtle, and used it.

My guess would be Maple. Have turned a bunch of it with different smells depending on where it grew. You should turn some that grew in or near a swamp - if you really want a treat!!

I would say it is Myrtle. I've gotten some from Mike that certainly had a smell to it. Heading out to his place today (gloat) and I'll see if I can't find a few matching pieces to this.
