How to make gear clocks ?

Anyone know a good source to make and create clocks be making my own gears on the laser ? I have a gear creating program I just don't know how to begin, like how to make the gears so it keeps perfect time and how many gears to use, I don't want to simply buy a pattern and make a clock, I want to learn how it all works, like in these pictures that is of a pattern you can buy......

    Hi Kasey

I've made a couple. This is a link to a thread on clocks a while back. I have the files here somewhere modified for laser. Let me check about posting them. Available on the net as gary's clock 2003. The original file would try to cut each segment 21 times before it moved on.

so is there different ways to make them, I mean the mechanics of them or can the gears be different with more or less gears and is there a math formula to the amount of gear teeth to get the clocks to keep perfect time ?

    Thanks
