    Disc Sander – Changing Sandpaper

Once a sanding disc has been on a disc sander for a while, it is a mess to strip the old one off and clean up the metal disk prior to installing fresh sandpaper.

here is a short video by Ron Walters showing how to change a sanding disc

Ron is wasting a lot of time. There is no need to remove the table or use a heat gun. A utility knife to cut the paper in half at the table, pull the top half, spin the wheel 1/2 turn and remove the second half. Unless the discs are cheap they should peel off without heat and not leave much residue. I think the heat gun leaves more glue on the metal than a cold pull. Even if they leave some I wouldn't bother cleaning the metal on every disk change. The method of folding the backing in half makes it possible to apply the new disk with the table in place.
