Thread: Mystery wood bowl

    Mystery wood bowl

A good friend gave me the blank for this bowl, he had the wood for several years and had forgotten the variety. I had thought it was zircote at first but after looking that up, not so sure. It is fairly dense and had an odor resembling dill pickles. It is about 9" dia X 3-1/2" tall, finished with lacquer. It needs another coat or two but we have been having damp weather and I prefer to spray lacquer during drier conditions, so I will post this picture.

It looks like some Cocobolo that I have. I am sure you will get a lot more opinions in the morning. (Might be too late at night for some of the old-time members.) lol.

I'm thinking bocote as well. Whatever it is, it sure makes a pretty bowl.

Very nice bowl Dennis. I also vote for bocote. If it darkens a lot in the next few weeks, it is a fairly sure bet.

I'm no expert on wood type, but it looks like it could be burmese blackwood that I have turn recently. Same grain, colors and smells horrible.
