I need some thoughts on storing Files and Rasps

Saw some kerfs in a relatively thick board. Store the files in the kerfs like knives are stored. Some files may require more of a dado due to added thickness.
Quick and easy. Inexpensive too.

Yep, piece of 5/8" x 1-1/2" poplar scrap with slots cut in it across the 1-1/2" face per the size of the file or rasp to fit. Double stick taped into a drawer.

When your collection or you favorites change, another piece of scrap and 10 minutes of your time can change it out. As a matter of fact, mine has changed yet again since these pics.

A canvas or leather tool roll works well if you want to take up less real estate and keep it portable. It would probably be something you'd want to make or have made as most of the commercial ones would have slots for chisels and gouges that would be bigger than what you wanted.

Whenever I build shop cabinets with drawers, I make several shallow drawers for storing files, sandpaper, boxes of screws, random drill bits, etc. I usually put about 3-4 at 1.5" tall, then a few at 2-3" tall, 1-2 at 3-4" tall, and 1 at 5-6" tall. The shallow ones usually fill up first.

I don't even bother with the divider. The files just lay flat with small gaps to keep them from touching.

I just toss them in a drawer in the tool box.

Here is what I made for my saw files. The wider spaces at the side accept the sets and jointing guide. The small handles in front are for holding the non-handle end of the file.

I also admit to having a drawer full of less loved files... Really need to organize that one of these days.

Here are two rotating file holders I made, one for files and one for rasps.


The one with the open sides was easier to make.
Now all I need is some bench space to set them on!

For the longest time, I just had them stuck to one of those long tool magnets, screwed into the wall. I put a layer of duct tape on the magnet so it wouldn't damage the teeth.

Certainly not elegant, but it works for me.

Those are cool Rick. Maybe a small wall shelf to screw them too, deep enough to allow them to spin(?).
