To be honest, I think turning birdhouse ornaments is fun cause there are just so many variations you can do. They are quick and easy.

Volcano shakers, peppermills, saltmills, cheese and cracker platters, wine glasses, pens...anything but bowls and HF's!

Where's a good place to get a basic tutorial on these?

Try 'tippe tops' easy to make and a lot of fun to play with, you can also 'cheat' and buy wooden balls {hobby lobby} and make a bunch in an hour or so. Great to give as gifts to friends . Look up on Google for a bunch of ideas or go to 'you tube' for videos.

I have recently tried inside out turning. It is a blast. Lots of good videos on youtube.

When I get the itch for something different I turn to segmented bracelets and Christmas ornaments ..... plenty of design opportunities.

Spin tops, quick, easy, and even the grownup kids love to play with them.

Our club did a croquet mallet and ball challenge for their summer picnic a couple of years ago. There's a good article on malletsmithing in an older (1986?) issue of Fine Woodworking.

ehhh...they all look the same after awhile. Since wood "art" is new, no one knows what's good, bad or just blowin' smoke. I'll stick with the useful stuff!

    Dan,
If you go to youtube and search for "wood birdhouse" you will find Bob Hamilton and Carl Jacobson both have birdhouse tutorials and if you try "turned birdhouse" you will find a bunch more.
