    Bluing annealed tool steel

Despite my best google-fu, I cannot find a straight forward answer to this question.

If you were to grind an edge on unhardened tool steel and caused a bit of bluing, would this have a negative effect on the cutting edge after heat treating, or does the process of heat treating "reset" the metal?

    Thanks for any insight

The heat treating does "reset" the hardness. After heat-treating, the tool hardness will be determined by the steel and the most recent heat treatment.

Also, finish grinding is usually done after heat treating, this is where you would have to be careful.

Thanks for the replys. I've been grinding post HT but thought I could speed things up by grinding pre HT.
