    first bowl from norfolk pine

i have used regular pine to try this, but this is from my 1000# shipment i got from florida. i love turning pine, smell so good, and this stuff is so beautyful. 5 eyes in the wood. it's rough turned, soaked over night in kirkland dishwashing liquid(equal parts with water in a 32gallon trash can).to prevent cracking and you know what, it worked. my 3rd piece of that kind, 2 with reg. pine and this one and no cracks.
now it'll spend about 250 hours in oil(watco) 12 hours in, 12 hours out. we'll see how it will look. when i pull it out of the oil, i wet sand it every time, should be smooth as glass when done

    so here we go

I have done so much with so little for so long I am now qualified to do anything with nothing......

P.S. If you are interested in plans for any project that I post, just put some money in an envelope and mail it to me and I will keep it.

I really like this niche you've picked Sasha. The piece is beautiful and the translucence is very inspiring. About your dishwashing liquid solution...is it straight or is it a cocktail of some kind?

    Sasha,
Great looking stuff. Do you experience any problem with the pitch that is so prevelant in pine? I've turned some tea lights from constructon grade 2X4's and thought they turned out well.

    pine

I too am very curious about turning pine. If it is good I have access to truckloads of pine. Pine and oak are pretty much the only woods you can find around here. People burn the oak but nobody wants pine as they say it clogs the chimney or sumpin. They just cut down 27 acres behind my house to put up 240 condos. Bummer. Lots of downed wood back there now. Any good wood in root balls? They pulling all the stumps up now.

ok, here just a fe answers.
the bowl is about 12" tall, 8" diameter.
the kirkland solution is 1 part water 1 part kirkland. i have a 32 gallon trash can wih about 22 gallons of liquid in it, big enough to fit most turnings.

and also, regular pine turns really nice, just make sure it has some spalting, otherwise it'll look kinda plain.

and it's in the oil for that long and so many times, so the oil can polimerize IN the wood, not just ontop of the wood
