    Box Elder question?

Well after several years of putting off turning I finally took some time to turn. I have turned in years past but have not done any recently. Bought a nice lathe with BIG intentions but flat work keeps me from taking time to do turning. I rough turned out a nice Box Elder bowl that has quite a bit of red markings. I see the scrap of cutting bowl blanks that the red turns brown very quick after cutting. How do you keep the red or does it turn brown from light no matter what? I turned rough blank and soaked in DNA overnight. Wrapped in brown bag and waiting now. Thanks for any replies.

James, it has been my experience that the red will fade to brown no matter what. I have heard of folks trying out different finishes that contain UV blockers but have not heard that it made any difference over time.

Which is a real pity, because that beautiful line is about the only reason I turned the box elder blanks I had.
