Several weeks ago I posted this destroyed piece of spalted river birch and based on the consensus of replies decided to try for a save. The first thing I learned is that for me, a save is something I can't get excited about and I rapidly lost interest in it. So today I quickly turned three bases and will ask you all to vote on one. These are cell phone photos and the piece has no finish and may not be straight on the pedestal. What do you think?

The wood is beautiful so it really is worth the save. If it were me I think I would try to put a plug in the bottom then you can still go with the original shape. good luck.

Either the rightmost one or get out your wood stretcher and make the middle one half the height of the original piece (rule of thirds) or taller. Actually I would like to see it on a taller pedistal, but larger base diameter than the middle one with the top being about like the right hand one.
Retired - when every day is Saturday (unless it's Sunday).

Great save, Bill! Definitely worth the trouble, IMO, and thanks for posting the three different looks. I, too, prefer the one on the left. In fact, if the base were even larger in diameter it would simulate the rosewood bases on many Asian vases.

LIke the first one the best of these. I think it would look good if the base was a lot less tall, just a line at the bottom of the piece, almost just a shadow.
The hurrier I goes, the behinder I gets.

Glad you saved it. I like the first one the best ,but find all three precariously small . The general base style of most of the turned pieces these days seems small.

Bill, the one on the left is the closest to the correct proportion. I think it could stand to be a little taller. Maybe by as much as several inches. Just my .02.
