    other then the amount of space needed the only thing I see that might not work for me is the amount of noise that fan would make being right beside you. cool idea though.

    Big overhead air cleaners typically use three filters to get the fines. While that probably would not work here as the fan is not powerful enough, I think a foam filter designed for a window A/C (washable) in front of a good furnace filter would help keep much of the dust from just being recirculated.

    I would want to test the air with one of those particle counters to make sure that you are not just creating a false sense of security. You might just be pushing the dangerous fines into the general air to be breathed in when you don't notice while collecting only the larger stuff that your body could eliminate anyway. Many are now recommending that air cleaners NOT be run while you are in the shop for that reason. Turn them on to clean the air when you leave. Cyclonic dust collectors are designed to force the fines out of the air stream.
