    Small Butternut Hens Egg

    I'm just saying . . . . . . . . .

This is a hen size egg I'm just finishing up.
    The wood is butternut.
Chip Carved with Acanthus motif with a stylized flower on top.

    This is practice.

The two difficulties are pattern application and carving in end grain.

I've got some things I want to do that require putting patterns on odd shapes and also carving extensively directly in the end grain.
    This was good practice.

Here are a few pics of the beginnings showing the hand-drawn patterns and some of the carving steps.

These pics are after the carving was completed and the stain was laid in.
Sanded and ready for final finish.

Two more coats of final finish with sanding in between are required, but this is essentially complete.

Questions and comments are always welcome.

    Be good to yourselves.

With an egg as intricate and detailed as this, what does the hen look like? Nice work and I enjoy the in process photos.

Cool, not much of a carver so a basic question. How do you clamp something like that or do you hold on to it while carving?

This is no fun for me looking at this type of carving as it is so far out of my realm!!!! Heck, I can barely make a box!
I really have admiration for people who can do this.

I have to cheat to make things look "nice" by using a laser. Just saying

I like that! Any close calls as you have to hold that egg in one hand while pushing fairly hard on a chisel in the other.

What a great shape and size for practice carving. And you can display it when you are done. Did you turn the egg or buy it someplace?

    Really cool!
Easter our family does pysanky (Ukranian easter eggs) wax and dye, metal tipped stylus - but your egg is just plain cool.
