Hello everyone,
This is my first post here. My turn to ask for help! I've been lurking for a few years on this forum, thirstily soaking up as much information as I can here. I've read hundreds of posts and they really helped me to decide which direction to go in when it came to buying my laser. I finally purchased a laser and it is all set up in my workshop. It is a Logilase Prime from Logilase in Toronto. Mike from Logilase has been a shining star (5 stars!!) when it comes to customer service and support. I must have sent him over 100 emails before actually purchasing the laser and he carefully and patiently answered each and every one. It is a 40W C02 laser.
Here's where I need some suggestions if anyone has any ideas:
I bought the laser for the main purpose of making wooden jewellery. (I'm sure I'll find lots more to do with it though!) I currently have an Etsy shop selling pinback buttons, cards, prints and other stuff. I want to take a lot of the artwork that I draw and sell as buttons and prints at the moment and turn those into engraved pendants, earrings etc. I am having a problem with getting my artwork into the laser software. Currently for my drawings I scan the line art that I draw, clean it up in Photoshop, export it to Illustrator, trace it and bring it back into Photoshop to colour. I am using a Mac.
So, I hoped that I could trace my drawings in Illustrator (CS 6), then export them as a .dxf file, and open them in the Laser software (a re-branded version of LaserCut called LaserDraw 1.0). The laser software is installed on a PC. I have tried .dxf files and .ai files but they just won't import into the LaserCut software. (I am exporting the .dxf files as AutoCad 2000). I wanted to avoid Corel because I am used to working with Adobe and didn't want to learn another program, but I guess I'll do that if I have to.
This is what I am doing currently:
-Open .jpg in illustrator
-Trace .jpg
-Expand Tracing
-export as .dxf
I know that some of you work with Macs, so I just wondered if you could suggest any tips for me (before I go completely batty). I am not really proficient in Illustrator so I don't really understand what I am doing as far as file formats go (and other stuff too). Sorry, this is so wordy. I never could keep things short!! :)
Thanks!
Sarah
