    Brace jaws

I was at my favorite old school hardware store yesterday looking for hog rings, and we happened to dig up an assorted box of brace jaws. I have one old stanley brace with a broken one, so I bought the box. Curious if I ought to list the rest here if anyone has a need. I'd also like to figure out what they go too, anyone have a resource you'd share to figure it out?

I know the http://oldtoolheaven.com/brace/brace.htm site has images for the Millers Falls jaws. Mostly you would have to click on the link in the brace descriptions to see the jaw image.

George's Basement might be another place to look for information:

I would love to find some jaws for an old breast drill I have.

Jim, those links have so much info, I know what I'll be doing with evenings for a while. I'll post some pics soon.

    Steve,
Brace jaws are much more specific than one would expect. But if you could post pictures of the jaws some of us would be able to recognize them.

IMGP0015.jpgI have a 10" brace that belonged to my father that I am trying to rehab and it is missing the jaw in the chuck. I have been in touch with George at George's Basement and he is seeing what he can do. He has replaced the missing springs in a Goodell-Pratt Breast Drill that was my father's and it works like a charm now.

OK guys, here are some pics.

I think the three hinged ones are universal jaws, one set is smaller than the other two. I need a set of the one I have the most of, the other pair looks like a set out of another Stanley brace I've got. I think they are all Stanley. The complete chuck is not marked, I don't know what it is. How close am I?

Joe B sent me an old Stanley catalog, I was wrong, I don't know that they all are again. The single set is a type G universal jaw for a Stanley, the two piece ones that I have the most of are type H interlocking, and I don't know what the hinged ones are.

    Thanks again Joe.

I'll get this figured out eventually, the hinged ones are Leland's Universal for Goodell Pratt and Lion braces, which are Millers Falls brands. I don't know what the two different sizes go too. Looks like the single set of universal jaws would also fit several Millers Falls braces. Fun to learn something I didn't know. I guess if anyone needs jaws, I have some extras.

Either way, neat find! Let me know if you find any for Pexto Samson chucks . . .

Is your's like this? It's been fun learning about them, I'm actively going to start looking in all the old troves I have access to, so you never know!

The Leland's universal jaws are excellent and they fit several MF brace models. The best thing about them is that they eat whatever you feed them with. Nice catch.

I bought a MF brace a couple of months ago without the Leland jaws. Another was purchased just for the jaws. They would not work in the other brace because they were to short. I didn't know they came in different lengths. Is there some place to verify this.
    Thanks,
    Joe

P.S. I just looked at the pictures. Two different sizes.

Steve, did you ever get in touch with George at George'ds basement. I visited him yesterday and he was able to supply a jaw for an old brace that belonged to my father.

He is really quite a guy and his supply of jaws is now minimal. He has been supplying jaws to those in need for quite a few years and he is now in need of replacements. He tries to rescue what he can from garage sales and braces that are beyond repair.

    Please end him an email.
