Thread: Cross Grain?

    Cross Grain?

I am building a standard standing quilt rack. I am going to dowel the 2 inch rails into the face of the side legs. Would this be a cross grain joint? I have seen a lot of these made but it looks like they have screwed and plugged them. If it is cross grain would it matter on a 2 inch rail. Thanks.

Are you making a mortise and tenon joint? As long as your wood is dry, you are good to go. I prefer to split "trunnels" from the same wood instead of dowels.

Something that narrow is not an issue for cross grain. Its not a problem and is done all the time. Its one of the places where cross grain gets WAY over thought. An argument could be made that you really dont need to concern yourself about cross grain untill your into double digit widths as long as your material is KD. Nosings are glued on 12" stair treads daily, wide rails on finished ends on cabinets, and so on. All cross grain, and all routine.
