Unusual smooth plane

Not just a steel sole, it wraps around the heel, across the back under the iron. Two "arms" stick into the mouth opening, and hold that rod in place.

Early yet, the only markings were a label hidding under the iron....in Japanese.

Middle two have the "handi-grip" sides, only one has an adjustable mouth. The little one out front of this parade has two Bailey's Patent dates on the almost used up iron.

Now, about that Japanese "infill" plane......any ideas?

Is it a laminated body plane, too?

I'm not sure I like the idea of a Platypus plane -
neither fish nor fowl.

Just came in the mail today. Iron will need sone work, lots of chip-outs on the edge. Wood sides are laminated to the wood core. Iron has a bunch of markings in it. Bevel up? Or, bevel down?

Have 8 planes to refurb, might take awhile.....

The Japanese plane is obviously a bevel down plane with that wide throat. The steel sole was possibly added. Why? because the sole cannot be properly set up with a steel sole on it.

Have since sharpened the iron up. Cleaned up the cap iron, and mated it to the iron's flat back. The metal wraps around the heel ( better target for the adjuster hammer) and continues around down to the mouth opening, forming a bed for the iron. It alos forms two arms to hold the cross pin. Sides are a thin laminate, with two small screws at the heel area. After a few well placed "taps" was able to get decent enough shavings in QSWO 2x4 scrap. It does NOT like to hit any knots, though.

There are at least 7 different markings on the iron. There is a slight hollow to the back of the iron. Seems to cut very nicely.

Now, IF you would like to see some shavings...may have a few photos tomorrow......

Seems it is an infill type of plane. Any clues as to a maker? Hints on sharpening the iron?

Neat plane...I am jealous. You will get some good work out of that Sargent number five...I have one in my fleet.
