    Black shoe polish

At times I put black shoe polish on ash bowls.Beforehand I put on a sealer then shoe polish, let dry wiped off shoe polish and stained. What sealer should I use before shoe polish.

The only sealer I use is Bulls Eye Shellac that has been diluted down 50-60%. Works well and dries very quick. I would think that a stain would NOT work well after a sealer, though.

No, it's not thin enough yet.

I used Danish Oil as a sealer then shoe polish then wiped off with additional Danish oil which was the final finish. This is Tree of Heaven.

One can get the same effect a bit easier by lightly spraying black rattle can paint and quickly wiping with acetone. The acetone will pick up the paint and deposit it in the open grain, leaving the hard grain clean. Then proceed with whatever finish you desire after giving time for the acetone to flash and the paint to dry.
