Dowels to attach support cross piece to trestle legs

I am considering using large 1 inch dowels glued in to attach the support beam to the legs on a large Trestle table that I am building. Will this be problematic in the sense it may interfere with wood movement and also strength? See the attached pics of drawing and mockup.
    Thank you.

Are the dowels intended to be the only connection between leg and stretcher? Seems weak to me--very little racking resistance.

If you do this, I would suggest including a dado in either the stretcher or leg (or both) to create a shoulder to resist racking.

The traditional tusk-tenon joint (with shoulders) is a much stronger joint, IMHO

    Great point. Thanks for this!
