    Toothing plane redux

I received a high-angle (75 deg) woodie toother earlier today, and spent my lunch playing around with it. I have a lot to learn, but I think I see the (or at least a) general approach: The toother sets up the surface so that a conventional smoother can take relatively deep cuts without tearing out.

I planed straight into some moderately steep grain and was able to get to a smooth surface fairly easily that way, even with the smoother's mouth open and cap iron backed off a bit.

Am I generally on the right path here?
