    What I found interesting is that it only has 1700 pieces - I think they might have gotten that wrong...

    It doesn't sound unreasonable. Even with 1/4" slices (it looks more like 3/8" in the photos), the main structure would only take about half of that, figuring each cross-section is a single piece.
    (Another possibility is that they meant 1700 sheets of cardboard. I have no idea what is a standard size for 'raw' cardboard...4'x8'?)
