    First walnut bowl

So thanks to a great friend, I was gifted with a couple of walnut blanks. These are the first pieces of walnut I've ever had the opportunity to work with and I was floored by the figuring and chatoyancy in this wood. The finish is a coat of walnut oil (allowed to cure for a couple of days) topped with wipe-on polyurethane. I did not do anything to seal the pores in the wood, and I'm actually glad I didn't. It's not a mirror finish, but I rather like the surface grain.

I was very excited about this one, so I thought I'd share.

Oh, very much so! He called me up one day and told me he was cleaning out his shop if I wanted some free wood...

Well, yeah! Of course I want free wood!

He loaded up my trunk with bowl blanks (cherry, maple, spalted oak, a couple of walnut, and a bunch of other stuff)... then told me to let him know if I ran out! So... yeah... nice doesn't begin to cover it.

"Chatoyancy" -- learn a new word every day! Cats-eye. Had to look it up.

    Nice word. Nice bowl. Thanks!
I forget where I picked up that word, but it is very fitting for the effect. I wish there was a way to show it in photos, but since it really depends on moving the bowl, I suppose the only way to really show it would be a video.
