Single stage dust collectors + plane shavings = Bad.

File this under "Things everyone here already knew".

I inherited my first ever dust collection system from the previous homeowner and finally decided to use it to vacuum up the ridiculous amount of shavings the tool rack project is producing. No problem, buy the floor vaccum 4" attachment and the extra hose. The DC needed some rehab, so buy the DC bags, etc. Historically I've been more of a broom and dustpan kind of woodworker.

    Fire that bad boy up!

So it turns out if you have long plane shavings, they gum up the impeller of a typical 1 HP single stage collector.

The happy ending is I'd already bought the trash can separator and that absolutely worked. Once I cleaned out the impeller.

I agree, normal dust collectors do poorly with plane shavings. The B&P Dust Collecting Systems are the best in class for this, in my humble opinion.
