    Transparent Wood

I wonder if it engraves like cast or extruded acrylic?

It sounds like it might be more epoxy than wood by the time they get done with it.

soak it for 2 hours in Lye and "other chemicals", which I'd probably rather not know what they are, then add epoxy--

A gallon of lye at HD is about $18, and epoxy isn't cheap... to create 'stronger than glass and doesn't shatter on impact' wood...

Sounds like a very hazardous and expensive to make version of polycarbonate...

Next up....transparent trees. We will literally be able to see the forest through the trees, giving the lie to that old adage.
