Thread: Pecan won't stay flat? Especially with resawing.

    Matthew, lots of good advice on this thread.


    I do a lot of resawing (production level), and in almost every instance when a board cups as you describe after resawing it is due to inconsistent MC% in the lumber.

    I think that your lumber has picked up moisture on the outside of the boards, and after resawing the boards are cupping due to the inconsistencies.

    Try using a pin type meter and barely penetrate the surface of both faces of the board immediately after resawing, and compare the readings between the two faces. Alternatively, try using a pinless meter to check the MC% at the core of the boards before resawing, and compare that with a pin type meter of the surface.

    That is a fantastic piece! Here is some pecan that did behave more nicely. 3 pieces 42" wide, 2" thick, planed. 8' long. Will make a fine table top.
