How's a can of coke "printed"

Maybe this is a very remedial question, but how is the design on an aluminum can of soda applied?

There's absolutely no deviation in the surface texture of the can. Is it printed in some form and then coated?

Ten years ago I remember them having more defined dots in the patterns that looked more like a traditional printer. But looking at one of the new coke cans now it looks absolutely flawless. No low luster areas and no noticeable dots in the printed areas.
