    Old Tung oil getting thick.

    Hi,

I've had a 1 gallon bottle of pure Tung oil for about 8 years now and its beginning to turn a little thick. The bottle had some air in it, so I just purchased some air tight finish storage bags from Lee Valley and will transfer the oil into the bags. Should I add something to the oil to thin it down at this point or leave it alone.

    Thanks W.

My limited experience has been that once an oil finish has started to go off, there's not much you can do except use it up quickly. But before doing so, use some on a scrape to make sure that it will cure fully.

I used a little to make a Tung/Beeswax cutting board rubbing cream and it appears to work fine. I don't think its at the point where its ready to be tossed out, but it's a little thick to pour. Will be interesting to see how long it lasts. Thanks.
