Another Sharpening Question

I bought the new Veritas honing guide a few months ago and love it. However, now I've seen how much off the primary bevels are on my Marples chisels. They seem to be at about 26 or 27 degrees instead of 25 degrees. Plus they are not square. So I need to re-grind the primary bevels to 25 degrees and square.

I don't have a bench grinder so the hand method will probably be the way I do it. I could use scary sharp or get a 220 grit waterstone. Any thoughts on what would be faster?

Also, has anyone tried the flatenning stones that Norton has? I use wet/dry paper on a piece of marble.

Your cheapest route is 80 then 120 grit sanding belts.

I would aim for 25 degrees, add a 1 degree microbevel with a 1200 waterstone, then complete this with a 6000 or 8000 waterstone.

Hey Derek - Thanks for response. That was basically what I was planning for on the angles. I'll try the wet/dry paper method before I try the 220 stone.

Mike, ditto to what Derek said on quickly bringing the bevel down to what you need. Also, to get and keep them square, here's a tip passed on to me from co-Creeker Eugene Collision: On the Veritas, set your bevel up using the "Red Zone" on both, the jig and gauge. It gives the iron or chisel more meat to register square against. Works slick!

I use 180 or 220 drywall screen to flatten my Norton's, works much better than sandpaper. Check some of the other recent sharpening threads for more ideas.
