Lacquer Fading Off My Kitchen Cabinets

About 9 years ago I built my own cherry kitchen cabinets. I finished them with lacquer. Now I have noticed that the lacquer is fading and in some spots, gone.
What do I need to do to fix the finish on these cabinets? Do I use lacquer again or something else?
    Thanks
    Eddie

Use the same class of product but maybe a better quality one. Same product means no concerns with compatibility. Cheers

Do I need to sand the old lacquer?

Yes, sand it all over with about 240 paper. Wipe down with what I call methylated spirit which is similar to denatured alcohol. It with clean off any residual contamination without eating the existing lacquer. Sand the bare patches enough so that the colour blends. I would spot spray any bare patches, let them dry, lightly sand and then coat the whole lot. Cheers
