    favorite Wax for finishing

    hi all
I am running low on some of the wax I have been using for a couple of years now and was wondering what you creekers liked for wax. Presently I was using some stuff made by "protex" that I think I got from liberion finishes. I bought some butchers wax at the depot and did not like it. The minwax stuff is ok, but I mainly use that on my iron tables and such.

so what do you all like ?

    Hi Lou,

I use the Minwax natural. I've tried the Briwax stuff but didn't like how it buffed out. As an added bonus, I like the smell of the Minwax.

This is an easy one: "Renaissance Wax". Not the cheapest stuff around, but, "..a little dab'll do 'ya"! Also works great for machine surfaces and hand planes! Applies easy, comes off easier!

Rob, it's right around $21.00 for what looks like a deceptively small container. Well OK, the container really is small! BUT, like I said, very little goes a real long way! When I saw the price, I too started searching around. I found out two things: 1) Not a lot of places carry it. 2) Those that do, price it the same! I get mine at Woodcraft. Try it once and I doubt you'll use much of anything else! (BTW, you can actually thank Gene Collison for this little tidbit! He's the one who turned me on to the stuff, originally for waxing down my hand planes.)

I use Briwax for all my finer furniture peices. I like the fact that they have colored waxes. I use them to alter the final color some when required. For waxing planes and such I use Minwax. For pens I use TSW.

    Good Luck,

Sam Maloof uses a mixture (I believe it 50/50) bees wax and Oil I've seen the recipe somew where and will post it when I find it that has withstood the test of time. Or you can buy it premixed from several sources. It goes for $11./pint or $16 per pint.

Don, Do you heat the oil/wax finish?

I've thought about trying this finish on one of my maloof chairs. I know it is just beeswax dissolved into tung oil, but do you heat it? If so, what do you use to heat your mixture?

    Thanks,

    John
