    Question Tool Shops in NYC

I'm an Aussie visiting NY. I have a vague memory of references to an old tool shop in NY that's an Alladins cave and carried seconds of precision tools and parts for things like engineers squares.

I've trawled my bookmarks and tried a few google searches, but come up blank. Is there such a shop?

Theres a good chance its gone. Most old buildings in NYC have been converted to housing or restaurants. You could try this place in Brooklyn:

That store might have been on Canal Street but has since closed along with Garrett Wade No longer anything like that in Manhattan.

As above, Tools for Working Wood in Park Slope is certainly worth a look. Lots of hand tools, many of them made on-premises.

Since you've come from a good distance, perhaps a stopover to Kansas City at Harry Epstein would tide you over.

I recommend a visit to Tools for Working Wood. I visited Joel there 5 years ago. Had a great time. Seems like yesterday.

    Regards from Perth

Thanks for the tips all. I'm not sure a trip to Tools for Working Wood is going to fit in with our current plans, although plans here are probably subject to change. A beautiful sunny day today, a couple of inches of snow forecast for Monday.

Shouldn't be more than 30 min or so from Union Square on the R to 25th Street.

    Alternate side suspended Monday. w00t!
