Edge sander...DIY or Buy.....

Hey folks,

A good friend of mine asked me to post this for him since he's computer challenged.

I know I've seen this somewhere, I just can't remember where. I remember a magazine article about building your own edge sander.
Anybody remember which magazine/issue???

Or...

Does anyone have a suggestion on a good edge sander to buy???

Either way is fine. I don't care...as long as I can borrow it when I need it.

I seem to remember one in Shop Notes but it's been a while ago. Maybe someone knows offhand what issue it was. If nobody comes up with it pretty soon I'll go look for it.

I was in the market for one a couple of years ago and decided on a 6x89" (the larger, oscilating ones were too expensive). The one I liked the best was the General International, the best value, and second best feature wise, was the Bridgewood from Wilkie Machinery. The guts of these were all from the same Taiwan factory (Big Boy brand), mine had green paint over a Powermatic gold color base. I was able to see the Seco, Jet, Powermatic, and General together at a store and there wasn't anything to choose from in the basic machine so I went on price.

Nice clean running machine. Probably runs around $650.00 now. Put it next to a powermatic and they look identical. This was before Jet and Powermatic got together. I've seen those do it yourself plans somewhere, but don't remember where. Steve

It's in issue 37 of ShopNotes. It came out in January 1998.

Hi Terry, I build the one from the plans in ShopNotes. It works well, not much vibration and was a fun project. Ive been using it for several years now with no problems.

Whether you buy or build, check out the availability of the belt size first. I blindly bought a Grizzley a few years ago and they were the ONLY source for that size belt. As of very late, Kingspor has limited choices in this size. Mine is 6 x 80, which is odd to a lot of others. Not sure, I think Delta, Powermatic and a bunch of others are 6 x 86. Anyway, their size has lots of grit choices, etc. Odd size or not, I really like the edge sander. I use miles of tee mold edgebanding and this preps the edges very well. Radius corners in a second.
