Anatidaephobia is the term for the fear of being watched by ducks, geese, or swans. It comes from the scientific name for the bird family that includes these waterfowl (Anatidae) and the Greek word for fear (phobos).

While the term itself is believed to be a humorous invention from a comic strip, it does reflect a real anxiety some people experience with birds. A true phobia would involve intense and irrational fear that disrupts daily life, rather than just a general dislike.

    Here's a breakdown of anatidaephobia:

Origin: Likely coined by cartoonist Gary Larson in a comic strip depicting a man being watched by a duck.
Meaning: Fear of being watched by ducks, geese, or swans.
Classification: Not a clinically recognized phobia, but relates to the broader category of ornithophobia (fear of birds).
So, while you might not be diagnosed with anatidaephobia, a fear of ducks can be very real for some people.

Alfred Hitchcock heightened ornithophobia and brought it to public attention in 1963.

Don't forget, there is some evidence that birds evolved from raptors of the dinosaur era.

Working in the shop this morning. I'm 67 now. Brought in some lumber for a project over a week ago to acclimate and last week I laid it out figuring out how to use so I can get what I need. After a week it is completely gone, so I start over. Calculation, legal pd, pencil...I feel like Jethro Bodine from the Beverly Hillbillies, I was "cypherin." Got it cut into pieces and milled one side flat on the jointer and staked it out to rest before finishing it up. When I was done I thought, I'm getting good at this, but I'm getting to old to do it! Getting too old to woodwork or getting too old to do your "times" and your "gazintas" ? :-D

I used to mess up my "times" and "gazintas" enough to get me to change to not using numbers. Instead, using a story stick and dividers makes for less errors.
