Thread: Looking for ideas - screw/fastener storage

Adam Savage (the Mythbusters guy) has some good, but expensive, storage solutions. Here's one that's not too pricey:

And here's a DIY version of another one of his units:

I'm planning on doing this method one day:

I'll probably make the shelf system, but won't install all of the individual toolboxes. I'll do 6-8 or something but then will make my own drawers for some of my larger stuff that can slide in and take up two units for deeper stuff, or single units with custom smaller boxes inside.

I have a Durham 12 gauge steel cabinet that holds all my bins. I love it. Some of the bins are way over loaded and it still holds them fine. I just need to be careful about not letting my boys slam the doors as some bins are way full and things fall out.

I use DeWalt portable storage boxes, which I buy when they're on sale at the borg. I like these because they are sturdy and the bins in the larger ones are removable, which I find very handy. I just finished making a cabinet for them a few days ago that fits in a corner of a storage shelf in my shop. I used heavy duty lazy susan hardware so it can be two-sided and use the space more efficiently.

Following Jim B.'s post, I started looking around my garage for places to mount some storage bins, for small parts (screws, nails, etc.).

I received one of three, that I ordered, with different size bins and did this.

Very nice, I use those containers for most of my mechanical, nuts and bolts, storage, but I don't quite have enough to warrant making a nice stand like that. Mine are just stacked on a shelf.

That's a really great idea, Chris! I'm guessing you'll want lighter hardware in there given how the slides are deployed, but there's always a lot of that kind of thing hanging around!

The most expensive tool is the one you buy "cheaply" and often...

The slides are rated at 100lbs, doubt I'll get close to 16lbs - 20lbs, that would be 4oz in every draw.

Not the most practical but the best looking I've seen.
