When a platter becomes a bowl....

Well, this started out as a platter but by the time I got done profiling it, it was going to be a deep platter...basically a shallow bowl. Anyway, this was just to play around with a new technique with my new 100mm jaws for my SuperNova courtesy of a Christmas gift certificate.

New technique....I basically turned this entire bowl/platter using the tailstock in support of all the shaping and hollowing out. Frankly, it was in the way a whole lot. I also used the chuck as cheap compression chuck with the tailstock supplying the pressure. This let me finish the bottom with a respectable footing and eliminate the recess. I sanded off the final nub from the tailstock with a badly rigged sanding disc in my cordless drill. Anyway, it's all about learning and experimenting.

The HARDEST thing was turning a bead on the edge. I used a spindle gouge and a 3/8 bowl gouge to do it. I'd love to see someone do this. I thought the spindle gouge was going to catch at any moment because it was extremely awkward trying to keep the bevel rubbing to roll the bead over....plus the stupid tailstock was in the way.....I finally moved it but still my nerves and confidence were disappearing quickly.

The wood is Obeche...my door making buddy calls it 'blonde mahogany'. Extremely soft. When stained, it does pass for mahogany very well. The upside is that a 10-12ft solid door is a lot lighter. The finish is one heavy coat of tung oil. 10 3/8W x 1 5/8H

Very pretty piece Chip! I've done the tailstock thing too and I know your pain. But it does keep everything steady. Nicely done....The result is great (Better than mine ever were)
